Power inverters are used for a plethora of things, such as camping trips, RV’s, mobile homes, etc. But easily the most popular is using it as an emergency power source. You already know why you want a power inverter, but now you need to figure out what you’re going to use it for. The first thing you’ll want to do is go around and write down a list of appliances, electronic devices, and anything else you might want to be able to run with emergency power. You want to be sure that the power inverter you buy can sufficiently run everything you need it to.
As you’re coming up with this list, you’re going to want to be on the look out for specific units of measurement that can be found on the service tag. Voltage is the first spec you’re going to want to be looking for. It comes in various increments, but 120 is usually the most popular. Afterwards, you’re going to want to find how many amps it needs. When you have these two numbers together, you’ll be able to multiply the amps by the voltage to come up with how many watts you’ll need for each item.
So, for instance, if you find an item that is 120 volts and is only 2.0 amps then the overall wattage is going to be 240 watts.
Inverters and Your Vehicle
Most vehicles work perfect with a power inverter that has an output of 1750 watts, for reference. That’s not to say you can’t go lower or higher, but it’s a great middle ground, and you probably don’t want to stray too far away from that.
When using the inverter, you’ll want to make sure that it’s close to the car and covered. You don’t want the inverter to get wet, blown over, snowed on, etc. Another tip is to not use jumper cables to connect the inverter with the vehicle, instead use ring terminals that fit over the inverter post.
Finally, make sure that you keep the vehicle running while it’s powering the inverter. You can still use the converter while the vehicle isn’t running, but it’s going to drain your battery pretty quickly. Having the motor run constantly recharges the battery so you can the inverter for a longer amount of time.
